Tired of manually tagging every single post? Auto-tagging lets you set up rules once, and it'll tag matching posts automatically β€” both existing ones and anything new that gets published.

Auto-tagging is a powerful time-saving feature that allows you to automatically categorize posts under specific brand content pillars based on keywords, hashtags, or phrases.

Instead of manually tagging each post, you can set up automated rules that will tag current and future posts automatically.

What is Auto-Tag

Think of auto-tagging as your content categorization assistant. You give it some keywords or phrases, and it scans your posts to tag anything that matches.

The best part? It works continuously in the background, so future posts get tagged too, without your effort.

Auto-tagging assigns posts to brand content pillars based on your defined text criteria. This feature runs automatically, tagging both existing posts that match your rules and any new posts that contain your specified keywords, hashtags, or phrases.

How to Set Up Auto-Tagging

Step 1: Find the Search Box

Head over to your Posts section and look for the search box at the top.

You'll spot an "Auto Tag" button right next to it β€” that's your new best friend.

Step 2: Tell It What to Look For

Here's where you get to play around with different search options. Take a look at my example below πŸ‘‡

β†’ Adding the keyword I’m looking for

β†’ The posts shown are only the ones that include my keyword β€” in the selected time period, only 7/ 192 posts include the keyword I added

πŸ‘‰ Rules β€” other search options:

  • Just want to match one word? Type it in: Cannes

  • Need an exact phrase? Wrap it in quotes: "film festival"

  • Want this OR that? Use OR: "red carpet" OR glamour

  • Need both things together? Use AND: "film festival" AND Cannes

  • Don't want certain stuff? Use NOT: NOT "behind the scenes"

  • Looking for hashtags? Just type them: #cannesfilmfestival

Step 3: Hit That Auto Tag Button

Once you've typed your search terms, click "Auto Tag" and watch the magic happen.

Step 4: Give a name to your Brand Content Pillar

After you click on the "Auto Tag" button, you must give your new Brand Content Pillar a name.

First, click on the dropdown.

Second, type the name of your brand content pillar and click on "Add" β€” I named mine "Cannes" to match the keyword I added.

Step 5: Create the Auto Tag

After following these steps, don't forget to click on the "Create Auto Tag" button, and watch the magic happen.

VoilΓ ! The posts are now part of the Brand Content Pillar you just created β€” they're tagged according to your setup.

Tips & Tricks

Start simple. Don't try to create the perfect search rule on your first tryβ€”begin with obvious keywords and build from there.

Use the search function like a preview before you commit to auto-tagging. See what comes up and adjust accordingly. After adding your keywords, you will see the posts matching your search.

The sweet spot? Campaign-specific keywords. If you're running a giveaway, search for "giveaway" and auto-tag all those posts. Black Friday promotion? Search "black friday" and boom β€” all your sale posts are tagged.

Got a specific campaign name like "Summer Movie Marathon"? That's perfect auto-tagging material.

Brand-specific hashtags work great for this. Got a campaign hashtag? Perfect for auto-tagging.

If you're like Mubi and have hashtags for specific campaigns or promotions, just drop that hashtag in the search box and let auto-tagging do its thing.

What Happens After You Set It Up

The system doesn't just tag your existing posts and call it a day. It keeps watching for new posts that match your criteria and tags them automatically. You literally set it and forget it.

You can still manually tag posts if needed β€” the auto-tagging won't mess with your manual work.

Edit your Auto Tags

If you want to delete an autotagged Brand Content Pillar or just edit it, you can easily do this from the Home section of your project.

The brand content pillars that were created automatically via auto-tag have a distinct note on the list.

For example, the one I created has the 'autotag: Cannes' because that was the keyword I added to the search box.

Click on the bin to delete the content pillar completely from your project. Use the pen to edit it:

  • You can rename the brand content pillar and (optionally) edit the autotag rule

  • If I change the autotag, it means that the posts matching the new criteria will be automatically tagged and be part of that Brand Content Pillar

β†’ For example, updating the autotag rule from Cannes to #cannes2025 will automatically tag all posts that have this specific hashtag in their description

β†’ This means the content pillar will change β€” it may include fewer or more posts depending on the new criteria

Final Thought

Auto-tagging transforms content organization from a tedious manual task into a seamless, automated system. Whether you're tracking campaign performance, organizing seasonal content, or making sense of months of posts, auto-tagging handles the heavy lifting. This lets you focus on what truly matters β€” analyzing your content strategy and improving results.

The real power reveals itself over time. Your auto-tags quietly work in the background, organizing new content the moment it's published.

Set up a few smart rules today, and your future self will thank you when content analysis stays perfectly organized with zero extra effort.
